She positioned her face in the centre of the shot and when I saw it, my heart strings pulled for the very first time in long while. For the very first time in a long while, I felt proud to be alive, healthy and moving in a new direction.

Marketers run campaigns for many incentive reasons. Whether to motivate and encourage or to stimulate an investment, what matters today is that campaigns produce an intrinsic value that over history will impact the course of time.

I know now, I could never be alone. I wish I remembered the elation I felt when I was offered the position. That feeling has gone on retreat and I don’t have the energy to take it back.

It feels like a giant *cinnamon bun, he said. We came out of the theatre and I heard him sniffle. He asked me if I liked it and I answered, it felt sad. Only time will tell, should we just countdown the days? I counted down the days until then.

Wishful Thinking

This is a play about 3 personalities. It is set in a prison in space. They are trapped there in the future, trying to return home, which is Calgary, AB, Canada.

I thought long and hard about the reasons why I left. Did it have to do with change? I changed her, she wasn’t me. I was in reverse there, trying to prove myself when there was no need. Show them that I can be left-brained, I thought over and over again.

ABOUT BLOX

I gave up something very important – the ability to procreate. I think they were listening, but no one would make the sun shine. I became used to a large company running this way. It was amazing, the work I did.

ABOUT DAISY

She’s dressing for tomorrow, frantically preparing for what could be the start of something amazing. As soon as I’m free, I will quickly realize what reality is, she thinks.

The Sales Process

Hi everyone! Follow along, let’s begin!

BE ASSERTIVE.

An assertive approach is confident and direct. Assertive people know what they want and aren’t afraid to ask for it. They also respect the feelings and needs of others and are prepared to negotiate solutions that are acceptable to all parties. Once you’ve secured the first meeting (book same week, reply to email/call same day), arrive on time and with a smile on your face.

REPRESENT YOUR COMPANY.

Position yourself as knowledgeable and prepared. You must have a firm grasp of your services and an educated idea of the client’s needs. Use the first meeting to gather ideas and take notes. Summarize the client’s words and confirm your interpretation is correct.

CONFIRM BUDGET.

It is better to establish this right from the get-go. If possible, provide a verbal offer based on the parties’ negotiations. Provide a price sheet. Some helpful questions – Our services cost this much, does that work for you? If not, what works with your budget? Always position value over price. This is an investment because or I am showing you evidence based on. You can combine any previous positive experiences with relevant statistics/straight numbers and use Ahrefs for an SEO case. Then, wrap up by providing vital closing points, scheduling your next meeting and confirming proposal hand-off.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS.

From the beginning to the end of the cycle, you are creating connections with members of your community and potential customers. Try to understand where they are coming from. Show empathy. Everyone is affected by bad weather. Everyone has a bad day. Try to relate to them as if they were your friend.

Some other bad/good vibes – She just came in and shoved brochures in my face. She wasn’t prepared and looked tired …or was it actually… She gracefully entered, looked around, then walked over with a smile carrying some interesting papers. She explained her situation with ease and apologized for not being completely ready. My daughter kept me up all night! Being honest matters immensely!

Just like any strong friendship, you need to dedicate time and effort for the sale and relationship to develop successfully. The proof is always in the pudding (end result), but you still need to commit 100% along the way. A door to door visit may be brief, but it also demonstrates your energy, candor and confidence. A short, but powerful phone call shows commitment and integrity. Lead with your voice, tone and language. Also, take note of what you’re wearing (literally, mentally and spiritually). People are checking you out!

WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, DO AND DO AGAIN!

The sales cycle is often repetitive and can be lonesome. Believe in yourself, be extra creative and don’t worry. There are always other fish in the sea. You MUST fish however. Each day matters! Every touchpoint counts, no matter the brevity or weight, but treat each opportunity as your last. Don’t get down on ideas that aren’t ready. Instead, use the mere fact that they exist as a way to uplift your pursuits to greater and bigger things! He didn’t reply. Well, I’m going to contact this company instead. THEN. DO IT. He didn’t seem that interested. Well, why? Maybe I can present it this way. You can create openings and the universe responds, but you will need to take action to reap a reward!

BUILDING RAPPORT.

From the beginning to the end of the cycle, you are creating reasons to be in contact. Always enter and exit harmoniously. If you know there is a need, understand it and quickly establish your intention and validate awareness. Don’t be pushy; utilize messaging (i.e.: email) to set a rhythm. Maintain a sense of harmony throughout your interactions. You want to ensure you’re both on the same side of the coin, otherwise differences (minor – your mood, timing OR major – opinions, culture, phase of development, objections) will build walls, making it harder for you to breakthrough.

Be empathetic and create a reason to bond. Friendly and to the point text messages, substantive emails and smart phone calls. However, limit the amount. Pay close attention to things that don’t relate directly to the sale. Thoughtful comments and gestures are welcome, but maybe avoid ‘hugs’ (until they’ve been your client for at least 2 years). Your verbal and nonverbal cues are tools for establishing rapport and should be used strategically and effortlessly. What could be awkward for you, is thoughtful to them, but potentially vice versa.

THE PHONE CALL IS ALWAYS THE BEST WAY TO GO.

Closing throughout the sales cycle is about competence. How hard will you work. Will you push until then end. From the beginning to the end of the cycle, you are envisioning the satisfaction of all parties. When will it happen, how will it happen, what will their reaction be, what small or large moves can I make to move us closer to winning? Things also occur naturally. If there are delays, the best approach is to ask more targeted questions and to use a timeline. Simplify the offer, the budget or the project’s scope. And, gosh darnit, pick up the phone and call them instead. No one does this, because it is hard.

STILL DISCOVERING.

Many owners are still in the Discovery Stage. You might have to do some extra leg work to help them recognize their needs first before expecting them to jump onto an amazing proposal you spent hours, days or weeks putting together. For questions, make them as unique as possible and avoid close-ended questions at this point. You should know each other well enough by now, that open-ended questions will work to your advantage. We want to establish finality, so confirm project duration, budget cost and start date.

Technical Writing

Hi everyone! How technical can you be with creative content? This is a good question. Let’s start by looking at how we can define a technical writer.

A technical writer is an organized communicator for a company. They present the company in specific ways and focus on areas that require clear and succinct communication. They also work on creating and formatting material effectively to increase overall communication efficacy.

A technical writer for a communications company would be responsible for the below (and later on can assist with other areas like research, project management and customer advocacy):

  • Creating/formatting proprietary documents (i.e.: emails, meeting minutes, customer welcome packages, social media posts, blog and website content etc.)
  • Developing instructions, guidelines, training material, strategies and plans
  • Creating templates, marketing collateral, brochures, promotional materials, ad copy and presentations

Higher-level roles:

  • Writing contracts, proposals, RFPs, white papers, reports, feasibility studies and reviews
  • Acting as an interviewer, trainer, organizer, facilitator or mediator
  • Designing visual communication strategy, information graphics and/or data interpretation

Another advanced role is analytics (excerpt from Wikipedia):

The use of computer skills, mathematics and statistics, combined with descriptive techniques and predictive models to GAIN valuable knowledge from data. The discovery, interpretation, and communication of meaningful patterns in data; and the process of applying those patterns towards effective decision-making.

In other words, analytics can be understood as the connective tissue between data and effective decision-making, within an organization. A technical writer also observes and collects data from customers that suggests the product and/or customer experience can be changed or improved in a way that customers would prefer or benefit from.

So, technical writing can be used to enhance communication to a specific audience and can create simplicity from abstract or conceptual ideas. These specifications can improve user experience, time management, levels of customer satisfaction and other customer-centered metrics. 

Desirable traits of a technical writer: 

  • organized and able to optimize process
  • detailed and extremely focused
  • able to portray different styles and perspectives 
  • a leader and team motivator
  • easygoing and confident personality
  • insightful, intelligent and innovative
  • transparent, accurate and responsible

Background tip – I repeat ‘DO…with VANWHISTLE MEDIA today’, because repetition has been shown to be an effective selling tool. Scientists have found that repetition increases processing fluency. In other words, our brains find repeated words easier to process and remember. I really want to establish a focus in my message (do = doing = done). What will drive people to stop and read/look at our poster? The word DO repeated equals the word DOING repeated equals the word DONE repeating in their heads, thereby increasing desire and attracting demand. It’s always about thoughtful language, usage and placement!
Coming back to this project, I question the use of ‘talented’. For whatever reason, people hate that word. Like, a talented person couldn’t have an honest mandate. Or, to say one’s talented is to say, I’m egotistical. It really makes me wonder. What do you guys think?
I suppose at the end of the day, people are going to think how they want. So…if you’re going to do it differently, find trustworthy research to support your ideas!

Finding creative + effective ways to communicate can be a challenge. How will your audience receive your message? Will they be pleasantly surprised or immediately repulsed? It’s always worth the risk to edit things down to their simplest context. So, take a different approach!

1 – The Pen

How do you write anew? How do you continue to post after a long weekend of stuffing your face with turkey and cranberry sauce, to the point where, by holiday Monday you’re lost in a hazy misconstruction of football episodes, your daughter’s Super Monsters Halloween edition and extra pumpkin pie/pumpkin coffee cake streaming through your veins?

I drove into work this morning feeling like I took a 5 month mental hiatus and that it would take another 5 years to get back to where I was last Friday in terms of thought processes and drive. But this sobering feeling, is it better than the former? Which should I be chasing?

I finally arrived and tried my best to ignore CBC and Stephen Quinn. Parked and ready to nap, Daisy thought frustratedly, “If I don’t get to my desk, I will fall further and further away into this sluggish slump. It will impact the rest of my week in a very negative way. I can’t be doing it this way!”

Dang it. “It’s starting already,” quipped a voice on the radio, when suddenly two of them proclaimed, “I’m not ready to travel! Dang you, dang it, DANG YOU!”

Are YOU ready?

I’ve fallen! This will last for 2 hours, then the clock will stop ticking on October 21st. I only have so much time to regroup and reiterate my success using succinct words and a logical progression of content.

She’s gone again. Don’t worry, she will return!

Daisy looked upward, toward the roof and saw a glowing star leaning on its edge, skirts away from abandoning friends and arriving onto a dust covered pillow. Puffy like an oyster, she rolled over in bed, drawing her arms over her face and pushing down to feel that cozy, cold feeling she longed for throughout the day. Today was bright and sunny. Bold rays peered through large windows, allowing light to enter her Brooklyn studio apartment. The girl was ready for A Day, ready to do the job she did best – ‘social media marketing’ for an up-and-coming TED startup company in the SoHo district of Elevententeen.

Elevententeen was a designated area for a group of bright communications pupils. They had three things in common. One – they were all Bipolar Type 10. Two – they had recently quit ‘drinking’. And three – they lived with the intent to impact the digital landscape, as no previous humans could have done it before them.

Daisy grabbed her pillow and immediately clicked on Instagram. That nagging suspicion to see The Need fed her like a rich, decadent chocolate drink costing tons more than a third-hand Prada bag nabbed off Vestiaire (for Seventeen). She quickly clicked, but then something else happened. It did not open, she did not see the grace of her favorite celebrity and his infantry women. She just heard a sound, a long-drawn, slowly creeping vibration of ‘digital air’. The only thing she could think of was, “The content has become redundant however, I can see the validity in re-writing and re-working the same concept several times. That way it will not become null and void. The success that emerged from it originally will still be there. That’s editing!”

“It’s locked!”, “Were you able to get back in?”

No. So, I decide to just write. Write down your thoughts Chona, write them down and write them down again. Get back to your spot on the list, get back to you, this new you. But sadly, I have already developed a headache from the idea of it. Will she be able to leave the content as it is? Will she usurp the value of its flow by editing it down, editing it all out to make complacent sense? Can you back away and still smile and feel success? That is something Alice from Wonderland would say, “Things aren’t worth that much once you start editing out the originality Miss Chona Fe, but I think this is what you think then isn’t that the way?”

Chona looks inward at her periphery, flips her hair, then walks away.

Pursuing Success

Hi everyone! The lessons we learn make us responsible for our own success. Apply this bit towards your own positive journey! Some examples of ‘success journeys’ are: running a social media campaign, adopting digital minimalism or losing weight.

Our environment is filled with endless possibilities. It presents us with moments to launch investigations of choice. This power to choose is success and by pursuing it, we become enthusiasts, gatherers of insight and ambassadors for change.

The journeys we choose can nurture the soul. They can change who we are, deep down to our core. They can also provide a broad spectrum of individuals with the inspiration to make life-changing decisions, and they can allow us to reap more frequent and practical rewards.

When an individual becomes a manager of their own success, the implementation of innovative technologies and the free-flowing birth of concepts derived from our surroundings can actually help us. This surge precipitates newer and brighter outcomes.

We may not be experts in measuring success, but we can be experts, motivated by understanding. Let us be well-versed and capable of finding new ways to conceptualize and overcome old theories. If you can adapt an established decision-making process, you are essentially creating a new philosophy!

So many people, from all walks of life, pursue success. What sets you apart from others? For myself, I can make everything sound awesome! Language knows no boundaries!
